The Twelve Apostles
(Mark 3.13-19; Luke 6.12-16) Matthew 10
Jesus called his twelve disciples together and gave them authority to drive out evil spirits and to heal every disease and every sickness.
2These are the names of the twelve apostles: first, Simon (called Peter) and his brother Andrew; James and his brother John, the sons of Zebedee;
3Philip and Bartholomew; Thomas and Matthew, the tax collector; James son of Alphaeus, and Thaddaeus;
4Simon the Patriot, and Judas Iscariot, who betrayed Jesus.
The Mission of the Twelve
(Mark 6.7-13; Luke 9.1-6) 5These twelve men were sent out by Jesus with the following instructions: "Do not go to any Gentile territory or any Samaritan towns.
6Instead, you are to go to the lost sheep of the people of Israel.
7Go and preach, 'The Kingdom of heaven is near!'
8Heal the sick, bring the dead back to life, heal those who suffer from dreaded skin diseases, and drive out demons. You have received without paying, so give without being paid.
9Do not carry any gold, silver, or copper money in your pockets;
10do not carry a beggar's bag for the trip or an extra shirt or shoes or a walking stick. Workers should be given what they need.
11"When you come to a town or village, go in and look for someone who is willing to welcome you, and stay with him until you leave that place.
12When you go into a house, say, 'Peace be with you.'
13If the people in that house welcome you, let your greeting of peace remain; but if they do not welcome you, then take back your greeting.
14And if some home or town will not welcome you or listen to you, then leave that place and shake the dust off your feet.
15I assure you that on the Judgment Day God will show more mercy to the people of Sodom and Gomorrah than to the people of that town!
Coming Persecutions
(Mark 13.9-13; Luke 21.12-17) 16"Listen! I am sending you out just like sheep to a pack of wolves. You must be as cautious as snakes and as gentle as doves.
17Watch out, for there will be those who will arrest you and take you to court, and they will whip you in the synagogues.
18For my sake you will be brought to trial before rulers and kings, to tell the Good News to them and to the Gentiles.
19When they bring you to trial, do not worry about what you are going to say or how you will say it; when the time comes, you will be given what you will say.
20For the words you will speak will not be yours; they will come from the Spirit of your Father speaking through you.
21"People will hand over their own brothers to be put to death, and fathers will do the same to their children; children will turn against their parents and have them put to death.
22Everyone will hate you because of me. But whoever holds out to the end will be saved.
23When they persecute you in one town, run away to another one. I assure you that you will not finish your work in all the towns of Israel before the Son of Man comes.
24"No pupil is greater than his teacher; no slave is greater than his master.
25So a pupil should be satisfied to become like his teacher, and a slave like his master. If the head of the family is called Beelzebul, the members of the family will be called even worse names!
Repayment Offerings Leviticus 7
The following are the regulations for repayment offerings, which are very holy.
2The animal for this offering is to be killed on the north side of the altar, where the animals for the burnt offerings are killed, and its blood is to be thrown against all four sides of the altar.
3All of its fat shall be removed and offered on the altar: the fat tail, the fat covering the internal organs,
4the kidneys and the fat on them, and the best part of the liver.
5The priest shall burn all the fat on the altar as a food offering to the LORD. It is a repayment offering.
6Any male of the priestly families may eat it, but it must be eaten in a holy place, because it is very holy.
7There is one regulation that applies to both the sin offering and the repayment offering: the meat belongs to the priest who offers the sacrifice.
8The skin of an animal offered as a burnt offering belongs to the priest who offers the sacrifice.
9Every grain offering that has been baked in an oven or prepared in a pan or on a griddle belongs to the priest who has offered it to God.
10But all uncooked grain offerings, whether mixed with oil or dry, belong to all the Aaronite priests and must be shared equally among them.
Fellowship Offerings 11The following are the regulations for the fellowship offerings presented to the LORD.
12If you make this offering as a thanksgiving offering to God, you shall present, together with the animal to be sacrificed, an offering of bread made without yeast: either thick loaves made of flour mixed with olive oil or thin cakes brushed with olive oil or cakes made of flour mixed with olive oil.
13In addition, you shall offer loaves of bread baked with yeast.
14You shall present one part of each kind of bread as a special contribution to the LORD; it belongs to the priest who takes the blood of the animal and throws it against the altar.
15The flesh of the animal must be eaten on the day it is sacrificed; none of it may be left until the next morning.
16If you bring a fellowship offering as fulfillment of a vow or as your own freewill offering, not all of it has to be eaten on the day it is offered, but any that is left over may be eaten on the following day.
17Any meat that still remains on the third day must be burned.
18If any of it is eaten on the third day, God will not accept your offering. The offering will not be counted to your credit but will be considered unclean, and whoever eats it will suffer the consequences.
19If the meat comes into contact with anything ritually unclean, it must not be eaten, but must be burned.
Any of you that are ritually clean may eat the meat,
20but if any of you who are not clean eat it, you shall no longer be considered one of God's people.
21Also, if you eat the meat of this offering after you have touched anything ritually unclean, whether from a person or an animal, you shall no longer be considered one of God's people.
22The LORD gave Moses the following regulations
23for the people of Israel. No fat of cattle, sheep, or goats shall be eaten.
24The fat of an animal that has died a natural death or has been killed by a wild animal must not be eaten, but it may be used for any other purpose.
25Anyone who eats the fat of an animal that may be offered as a food offering to the LORD will no longer be considered one of God's people.
26No matter where the Israelites live, they must never use the blood of birds or animals for food.
27Anyone who breaks this law will no longer be considered one of God's people.
28The LORD gave Moses the following regulations
29for the people of Israel. When any of you offer a fellowship offering you must bring part of it as a special gift to the LORD,
30bringing it with your own hands as a food offering. You shall bring the fat of the animal with its breast and present it as a special gift to the LORD.
31The priest shall burn the fat on the altar, but the breast shall belong to the priests.
32The right hind leg of the animal shall be given as a special contribution
33to the priest who offers the blood and the fat of the fellowship offering.
34The breast of the animal is a special gift, and the right hind leg is a special contribution that the LORD has taken from the people of Israel and given to the priests. This is what the people of Israel must give to the priests for all time to come.
35This is the part of the food offered to the LORD that was given to Aaron and his sons on the day they were ordained as priests.
36On that day the LORD commanded the people of Israel to give them this part of the offering. It is a regulation that the people of Israel must obey for all time to come.
37These, then, are the regulations for the burnt offerings, the grain offerings, the sin offerings, the repayment offerings, the ordination offerings, and the fellowship offerings.
38There on Mount Sinai in the desert, the LORD gave these commands to Moses on the day he told the people of Israel to make their offerings.
The Ordination of Aaron and His Sons
(Exodus 29.1-37) Leviticus 8
The LORD said to Moses,
2"Take Aaron and his sons to the entrance of the Tent of my presence and bring the priestly garments, the anointing oil, the young bull for the sin offering, the two rams, and the basket of unleavened bread.
3Then call the whole community together there."
4Moses did as the LORD had commanded, and when the community had assembled,
5he said to them, "What I am now about to do is what the LORD has commanded."
6Moses brought Aaron and his sons forward and had them take a ritual bath.
7He put the shirt and the robe on Aaron and the sash around his waist. He put the ephod on him and fastened it by putting its finely woven belt around his waist.
8He put the breastpiece on him and put the Urim and Thummim in it.
9He placed the turban on his head, and on the front of it he put the gold ornament, the sacred sign of dedication, just as the LORD had commanded him.
10Then Moses took the anointing oil and put it on the Tent of the LORD's presence and everything that was in it, and in this way he dedicated it all to the LORD.
11He took some of the oil and sprinkled it seven times on the altar and its equipment and on the basin and its base, in order to dedicate them to the LORD.
12He ordained Aaron by pouring some of the anointing oil on his head.
13Next, Moses brought the sons of Aaron forward and put shirts on them, put sashes around their waists, and tied caps on their heads, just as the LORD had commanded.
14Then Moses brought the young bull for the sin offering, and Aaron and his sons put their hands on its head.
15Moses killed it and took some of the blood, and with his finger put it on the projections at the corners of the altar, in order to dedicate it. He then poured out the rest of the blood at the base of the altar. In this way he dedicated it and purified it.
16Moses took all the fat on the internal organs, the best part of the liver, and the kidneys with the fat on them, and burned it all on the altar.
17He took the rest of the bull, including its skin, flesh, and intestines, and burned it outside the camp, just as the LORD had commanded.
18Next, Moses brought the ram for the burnt offering, and Aaron and his sons put their hands on its head.
19Moses killed it and threw the blood on all four sides of the altar.
20-21He cut the ram in pieces, washed the internal organs and the hind legs with water, and burned the head, the fat, and all the rest of the ram on the altar, just as the LORD had commanded. This burnt offering was a food offering, and its odor was pleasing to the LORD.
22Then Moses brought the second ram, which was for the ordination of priests, and Aaron and his sons put their hands on its head.
23Moses killed it and took some of the blood and put it on the lobe of Aaron's right ear, on the thumb of his right hand, and on the big toe of his right foot.
24Then he brought Aaron's sons forward and put some of the blood on the lobes of their right ears, on the thumbs of their right hands, and on the big toes of their right feet. Moses then threw the rest of the blood on all four sides of the altar.
25He took the fat, the fat tail, all the fat covering the internal organs, the best part of the liver, the kidneys with the fat on them, and the right hind leg.
26Then he took one loaf of bread from the basket of unleavened bread dedicated to the LORD, one loaf made with oil, and one thin cake, and he put them on top of the fat and the right hind leg.
27He put all of this food in the hands of Aaron and his sons, and they presented it as a special gift to the LORD.
28Then Moses took the food from them and burned it on the altar, on top of the burnt offering, as an ordination offering. This was a food offering, and its odor was pleasing to the LORD.
29Then Moses took the breast and presented it as a special gift to the LORD. It was Moses' part of the ordination ram. Moses did everything just as the LORD had commanded.
30Moses took some of the anointing oil and some of the blood that was on the altar and sprinkled them on Aaron and his sons and on their clothes. In this way he consecrated them and their clothes to the LORD.
31Moses said to Aaron and his sons, "Take the meat to the entrance of the Tent of the LORD's presence, boil it, and eat it there with the bread that is in the basket of ordination offerings, just as the LORD commanded.
32Burn up any meat or bread that is left over.
33You shall not leave the entrance of the Tent for seven days, until your ordination rites are completed.
34The LORD commanded us to do what we have done today, in order to take away your sin.
35You must stay at the entrance of the Tent day and night for seven days, doing what the LORD has commanded. If you don't, you will die. This is what the LORD has commanded me."
36So Aaron and his sons did everything that the LORD had commanded through Moses.
Proverbs 22
If you have to choose between a good reputation and great wealth, choose a good reputation.
2The rich and the poor have this in common: the LORD made them both.
3Sensible people will see trouble coming and avoid it, but an unthinking person will walk right into it and regret it later.
4Obey the LORD, be humble, and you will get riches, honor, and a long life.
5If you love your life, stay away from the traps that catch the wicked along the way.
6Teach children how they should live, and they will remember it all their life.
7Poor people are slaves of the rich. Borrow money and you are the lender's slave.
8If you plant the seeds of injustice, disaster will spring up, and your oppression of others will end.
9Be generous and share your food with the poor. You will be blessed for it.
10Get rid of a conceited person, and then there will be no more arguments, quarreling, or name-calling.
11If you love purity of heart and graciousness of speech, the king will be your friend.
12The LORD sees to it that truth is kept safe by disproving the words of liars.
13Lazy people stay at home; they say a lion might get them if they go outside.
14Adultery is a trap--it catches those with whom the LORD is angry.
15Children just naturally do silly, careless things, but a good spanking will teach them how to behave.
16If you make gifts to rich people or oppress the poor to get rich, you will become poor yourself.
The Thirty Wise Sayings 17Listen, and I will teach you what the wise have said. Study their teachings,
18and you will be glad if you remember them and can quote them.
19I want you to put your trust in the LORD; that is why I am going to tell them to you now.
20I have written down thirty sayings for you. They contain knowledge and good advice,
21and will teach you what the truth really is. Then when you are sent to find it out, you will bring back the right answer.
-1- 22Don't take advantage of the poor just because you can; don't take advantage of those who stand helpless in court.
23The LORD will argue their case for them and threaten the life of anyone who threatens theirs.
-2- 24Don't make friends with people who have hot, violent tempers.
25You might learn their habits and not be able to change.
-3- 26Don't promise to be responsible for someone else's debts.
27If you should be unable to pay, they will take away even your bed.
-4- 28Never move an old property line that your ancestors established.
-5- 29Show me someone who does a good job, and I will show you someone who is better than most and worthy of the company of kings.
